Abstract

Educational institutions are social places where cultures, religions and identities as well as associated social positions and opportunities for participation are negotiated. Since they are structured by the discourses, orders and Ideas about what is normal in public spaces, they have a highly selective effect. The legitimation of powerful distinctions is often hidden in complex intersectional figures of reasoning, which are not always reflexively accessible to the pedagogically acting persons. Thus, in this article, I develop a discourse-sensitive heuristic that should enable us to reconstruct practices of differentiation, to deconstruct binary codings maintaining power relations, and to open up spaces of negotiation to deal with them.
