Within the classical tasks of theology, criticism of religion is usually assigned to fundamental theology. With the increasing breakdown of Christian plausibilities the position of criticism of religion in the theological task portfolio is shifting towards practical theological subjects. Religious education and fundamental theology share this task area, which encourages closer cooperation between the two disciplines. The basis for this is the question of the extent to which criticism of religion is already part of the self-understanding of religious education as a research discipline. From this starting point, the article presents how the relationship between religious education and fundamental theology has been seen up to now and makes its own proposal.
