Abstract

Jewish and Christian adaptations of Psalms for children reflect how they are understood in Jewish and Christian contexts. In contrast to other texts in the Hebrew Bible/Old Testament, Psalms are not only read in both traditions, but also prayed or recited. At the same time, they convey a biblical narrative that is read differently from each perspective. As a result, they play an important role in expressing Jewish and Christian identities. Accordingly, basic theological attitudes and pedagogical concepts can be observed in the selection, text form and illustration in editions of Psalms for Jewish and Christian children.

.
As adaptations of biblical texts for children that have so far gone unnoticed in children's Bible research, psalm adaptations are the focus of the project "Tehillim. Psalms in Jewish and Christian Religious Education" project at the Center for Jewish Cultural History at the University of Salzburg in cooperation with the Vienna/Krems University of Education. The article provides insights into the current research results.
