“School Catechesis” in the Field of Tension between Patriotism and Nationalism:
On the Ambivalent Role of Catholic Religious Education in Democratic Education in Poland

The article analyses the role of Catholic religious education in Poland in the tension between patriotism and nationalism. Starting from the historical events that contributed to the enduring intertwining of Catholicism with Polish identity, it shows how narrow the line is between often Christian-motivated patriotic and nationalist tendencies and how this issue is reflected in religious education. It identifies thematic emphases on Poland-centred narratives and heroic images within the current conceptualisation of religious education as 'school catechesis' and in terms of its curriculum guidelines, which can promote nationalism. The theoretical reflection concludes with suggestions on how a more critical and inclusive approach to religious education can counteract nationalism and strengthen democracy promotion.
