Abstract

According to the ‘Grundsatzerlass’ from 1978, Religious Education in the Austrian school system also has the obligation of teaching Citizenship Education as part of its curriculum.

The following paper gives insight into the development and implementation of Citizenship Education as a teaching principle and addresses current viewpoints from the field of the Didactics of Political Studies: What are the specific tasks of Religious Education with regard to the instruction of political issues according to the teaching principle Citizenship Education? Challenges and problem areas will be addressed in order to critically develop political aspects in the framework of Religious Education in the future.
