This contribution addresses the academic theological training of prospective teachers of religious education at secondary schools (age level ca. 10-16 years). First, it gives an outline of the structural standards of teacher training in Germany and an overview by presenting up-to-date statistics. As a next step, it outlines the subject-specific standards of the two major Churches regarding the contents and skills to be acquired by teachers at that school level. Subsequently, the specific requirements relating to this type of school are defined and made more concrete with regard to pupils. An awareness is raised for the fact that the view of religious pedagogy has so far been neglected when a qualified theological training of prospective teachers of religious education at secondary schools is concerned, before finally principles of a qualified religious education teacher training are presented that take the specific tasks of a teacher training for this school level as well as future challenges in religious education into account.
