‚Critique of ideology‘ has been main concept in religious education since the social and cultural reforms in the decade around 1968. Even though ideology-critical religious education may be grounded in a continuous but weak thinking tradition, the theoretical relevance of this concept has constantly declined from the mid-70s onwards. This paper presents an attempt to rethink ‚critique of ideology‘ as a contemporary didactic principle taking into account justified criticism. These considerations are illustrated by utilizing the communication-theoretical approach of ‚frame analysis‘ for religious education in schools. By means of this method media discourses on religion, e.g. the so-called ‚headscarf debate‘, may be examined ideology-critically.
