Abstract

This article focuses on educational processes in early childhood education institutions and shows how religious education contributes to the holistic development of children. To offer high-quality religious education processes based on current scientific findings, and thus promoting the overall development of the child, elementary educators need appropriate competences in this area of education. Based on key documents for early childhood education institutions in Austria and the resulting educational mission, the article represents an attempt to define basic and partial competences in religious education, and to assign these to a competence model.
