Abstract

This essay discusses the question of how judgmental competence for Islamic religious instruction can be justified by the Islamic history of ideas. In addition, we focus on the Qur‘anic concept of reason, the view of the theological school of the Maturidiyya, to which today the majority of Turkish Muslims (for example in Germany) belong. We also take a look on the ideas of the Islamic philosophers to reason.Towards the end of the essay, the Islamic ideas are compared with modern educational theories and finally discussed how the previously presented concept of reason can be operationalized in the classroom. In the final analysis, possible aspects of a still to be developed Islamic religious didactics are outlined.
