The Bible, its Readers, and their Perspectives:
Polyphonic and Fragmentary
Keywords:
biblical hermeneutics, reader-response criticism, polyphony, fragmentarity, contemporary literatureAbstract
Approaches within the theoretical branch of reader-response criticism assume the importance of the reader for the process of giving sense to a literary text. The same needs to be considered regarding the question of biblical hermeneutics and didactics. Consequently, this leads to a polyphonic understanding of biblical texts. At the same time, the interpretation of the text stays fragmentary. The resulting fragmentariness and colourfulness mirror central aspects of humanity as plurality, heterogeneity and fragility, as the dialogue between biblical texts and contemporary authors like Patrick Roth and Christoph Ransmayr displays.
